Latent Semantic Indexing…What Is It?

LSI Keywords Friend Or Foe?

Well the simple answer is most definitely ‘Friend’ although when you are starting out with SEO it can be a daunting experience trying to uncover the LSI Keywords that you need for your pages and blog posts.

So let’s dive in and ask the question you are probably thinking right now?

What are these LSI Keywords that you speak of?

‘LSI Keywords’ or #Semantic Keywords’ are basically the best or rather the most closely related keywords to the main keyword that you are using. Search engines (at least most of them) use LSI Keywords to look for related synonyms of your page titles.

Here’s an example, if the title of your page or post was “Horse Racing” the search engines would be expecting to find such words in the pages content as Horses, Jockey, Racing, Grand National or if your title was “SEO For Beginners” you may have the words Search Engine Optimization, Semantic keywords and keyword density.

Make Sure You Do Not Underestimate Page Content

A good SEO strategy means having a well laid out plan for your content; don’t just assume that by having the keywords in the title and the header tags (H1/H2 etc.) Content which is seen to be of higher importance by having bold or italicized are also great for SEO; using LSI should definitely be a part of your SEO knowledge though as it can affect the keywords that search engines will rank your site for.

You need to make sure that search engines find synonyms within the content which relates to the title and sub-headings of your content as this will greatly aid your ranking results for the LSI keywords and phrases. The chances are that you already use keyword techniques and you should use them to add secondary keywords into your pages and posts too but the rest of your content should be full of LSI synonyms so that search engine spiders can help push your pages up in the rankings.

Do Not Keyword Stuff Your Content

This is an obvious one but as I mentioned that you should have a lot of LSI and secondary keywords in your sites pages and posts its also a good idea not to stuff your content full of drivel for the sake of it. The whole reason that LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing) came into place was to stop people cheating their way to number one spots without anything other than filling their sites pages with irrelevant keywords.

People where literally ramming their content full of hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of keywords, meta tags and descriptions and then even more keywords! Many had pages that were nothing more than random keywords of their choice helping them to hit that illusive number one spot but not deserving to do so. YOUR followers, readers, listeners, whoever they are, they want content that appeals to them, that they can use or digest and gain knowledge from. For the love of SEO give them what they want!

Is LSI Always Relevant?

In a word…No.

Sometimes LSI isn’t relevant for example LSI will not help nor hinder a page that has no real intention of achieving search engine ranking such as landing or squeeze pages. This is because of its very limited and minimal content, but for the main site or blog posts LSI is very relevant.

Semantic Latent Indexing is a great tool for us, it keeps the content online pertinent, it keeps everything rich and full of valuable content which not only benefits you with more traffic and better rankings; it also benefits the visitors of your site(s) by making the owners stick to building quality material for their sites.

How To Become One With LSI

Listen, Latent Semantic Indexing may sound daunting, but it’s pretty simple to use as a great ranking weapon that you definitely want to keep in your arsenal. To help you through the ins and outs I have got a few easy steps you can take; follow these guidelines:

Step 1 – Use Relevant Wording

on topic

Use the words that are relevant to your content and title; if your title is ‘How To Play Golf – A Beginners Guide’, then make sure your content is about learning golf as well as adding relevant titles and sub-headings.

Step 2 – Try Not To Over do The Keywords

keywords

DO NOT overuse your chosen keyword phrases and keywords in the content you are creating. If it looks like you are trying the forbidden ways of keyword stuffing then you are going to get penalized for it. This could dash any chances of you ranking your site at all never mind ranking your site higher in the search results!

Step 3 – Try Not To Use Spinning Software

spinning

Never use article spinning services or software, the majority of them just come out with useless rubbish and a few relevant keywords. However if you are going to use a spinning tool then make sure you have someone who can adjust the mistakes that it makes. This could be you or it could be outsourced to someone else. However you deal with it make sure the finished article or page is on form, of high quality and you should be fine. My advice though…write it yourself (or outsource the writing to someone else).

Step 4 – Outsource Your LSI Content

outsourcing

Following on from the previous step is outsourcing. Remember content is king and quality is the king of content so if you are going to outsource your writing please make sure you use due diligence and request the person do a test run for you, that way you will know what you are going to be getting. If you want to outsource you can try sites such as oDesk.com and Elance.com

Step 5 – Google Webmaster Tools

google

Use Google Webmaster tools for helping you see what keywords may be ranking on your website. Google offers some fantastic free keyword tools so take advantage of them and work on your content that may not be doing as well; remember you can always go back and take the above advice to make your content more relevant…better late than never!

Just remember there is no real magic trick here, Latent Semantic Indexing is just a simple SEO technique that weeds out the good from the bad; so as long as you are the former you should be good to go. Also don’t get paranoid from now on thinking that you need to be a control freak every step of the way. The great thing about LSI is that you are probably already using it without even knowing but now you have the advantage of the above guide to help you use it even more effectively.

Just provide your audience with quality content that is rich in relevancy, that provides quality and you have nothing to worry about.

Just don’t be a keyword stuffer!
